The Governing Board at Hethersett Woodside Primary & Nursery School
The Governing Board at our school is a group of volunteers who look to fulfil the three core functions set out for Governing Boards by the Department of Education. These are:
- To set the vision and strategic direction of the school
- Holding the headteacher of the school to account for the educational performance of the school
- Ensuring that public money is well spent
The Governing Board is made up of the following roles:
- Elected Parent Governors
- Authority Governors
- Elected Staff Governor
- Co-opted Governors
The headteacher also sits on the governing board.
Whilst the Governors may be responsible for policy and strategy, it is the headteacher who is responsible for the day to day running of the school. The current Governing Board feel very strongly that we are supportive of the headteacher in an ever changing educational arena and look to act as Mr Carter’s critical friend.
Governors support and challenge the headteacher and leaders by gathering information, asking questions and helping decided what is best for the school, staff and pupils. We are not there simply to rubber stamp decisions.
The Governors have a large number of legal responsibilities including ensuring that the national curriculum is delivered, our children our kept safe, our staff are well looked after and supported and that the school balances its books financially. It is not allowed to overspend.
The full Governing Board meets at least twice every school term and the various sub committees meet outside of this.
Whilst we would encourage any parent who has an issue about the school to discuss this with Ms Mainwaring in the first instance, parents have access to the Governing Board via the school office.
