Writing

The process of learning to write is complex; it involves a variety of skills but is an extremely powerful medium. Hethersett Woodside aims to empower children with the different skills needed to write effectively dependent on audience, purpose and genre.

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, we use the Talk for Writing approach to structure sequences of learning. This approach encourages the use of oral language first to help their development of writing structures. Children will also look at specific text types to understand the specific features found within different genres of writing.

For each unit, a text or story map is shared. The children use the pictures alongside actions to orally learn the story or text.

In Key Stage 2, children will build on their work from their formative years and they will also look at text types where they look at text type and stylistic features more closely, whilst also engaging with 5 different core texts that will give inspiration to their writing lessons.

Working Walls within the classrooms support children to develop their writing.

The 6 core texts for each year group have been chosen to ensure exposure to a range of text types and styles, whilst also covering a range of genres and themes, at an age-appropriate level. Where suitable, texts have been chosen to link to wider curriculum learning. Children need diverse books to be able to relate to them on a personal level, but they also need them in order to understand more about the wider society around them. Texts have been chosen to help represent a range of cultures, experiences and voices to ensure that our children are able to engage and celebrate the wonderful diversity within our world.

The core texts to be studied by each year group each half term are as follows. As part of a our evolving curriculum, when we learn about new texts or when new texts become available, our selection of core texts may change.

The core texts to be studied by each year group are as follows:
